poor WIFI latency/jitter

Hi Guys,

I am suffering very poor latency over wifi.

Pings will vary between 10ms and 700ms.

This makes ssh over wifi a bit hopeless.

Throughput is not bad using iperf, I get around 40 Mbits/Sec.

I have tried with two different wifi access points.

Using wpa_cli and scan I have a signal strength of -50 for the nearest access point (around 6 metres away).

Anyone any ideas?

Cheers

Andy

Hello Andy,

Hello Andy,

Can you please confirm you are taking about the MiniZed, also what hardware platform are you using?

Thanks,
Josh

Hi Josh,

Hi Josh,

Yes it is the minized.

I am using the linux image that came installed on the board.

Cheers

Hello Andy,

Hello Andy,

In my experience, network performance is highly dependent on local Wi-Fi network traffic/congestion.  When I tried at my home (where I purposely moved my home network off Channel 1) I measured 30+ Mbps and consistently quick ping times.  The story is much different if I use my iPhone as a Wi-Fi hot spot or work LAN. Everything you are experiencing I would think is expected determined by your own Local Area Network.

Regards,

Josh

Hi Josh,

Hi Josh,
Thanks for the reply.

I dont think this this is the case here, it is a problem with the minized.

As I said it can manage 40mbps throughput, but the latency is the problem..

I just did did a test on the same wifi network with an ESP32 and the minized sitting side by side on the desk. The pings were done from a mac on the same wifi network concurrently. The ESP ping times were always less than 5ms the minized had timings of between 20ms and 1100ms.

ping times from the minized to the mac are better but still not great, they vary from 20ms to 90ms.

cheers

Andy
